Sea salt is considered to be an important and integral part of the world’s history and a vital resource to mankind. Sea salt is the residue of sea water after being evaporated by sunshine.

In ancient times, its primary use was for food preservation and its healing abilities. By the 6th century, salt had become a valuable commodity. Roman soldiers were often paid for their service with Sal, in Latin, from which the term Salary comes from.

The Maltese Islands hold evidence of around 40 early Roman salt-pans sites, although only a few sites are still in use today.  Salt pans are complex system of channels and rectangular basins that once have been excavated by hand in Malta’s oldest rock layer, the Globigerina Limestone.

One site in particular, lies in the South-eastern tip of Malta, in Delimara. The traditional skill and art of salt harvesting in Delimara, has been passed on from one generation to the next over hundreds of years.

Delimara sea salt is harvested in its natural state; crude, unrefined and has no additives. It may vary in colour due to its unbleached raw composition and to its level of moisture.

Delimara sea salt is packed with over 60 trace elements including sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium, magnesium, cooper, zinc, amongst other beneficial minerals that are vital to the human body.

Delimara sea salt is particularly crumbly in texture which will easily melt into your food.
